During the peculiar years of 2020/2021 Studies in Photography, the publishing arm of the Scottish Society for the History of Photography, produced Leaves – two high-quality publications featuring photography, creative text and short essays celebrating the importance of trees, and the life-affirming qualities of urban green space. Both publications were co-edited by Sara Stevenson, former Chief Curator of Photography at the National Galleries of Scotland and Alex Hamilton, Chair of the Scottish Society of the History of Photography.

NHS Lothian Charity’s Green Health programme recognises that areas of the NHS outdoor estate are a valuable health resource for both people and planet. These spaces make a significant contribution to the physical and mental wellbeing of our patients, visitors, staff and communities. Trees, plants and their natural environment are key assets in our response to climate emergency.

Studies in Photography publishes Leaves alongside its main photographic journal in order to encourage a multi-disciplinary conversation around the essential concerns for life, such as nature, health, wellbeing and creativity. Inspired by the words of Patrick Geddes, ‘by leaves we live’, we have invited writers, poets and photographers to respond to this call.

Over the year we run a number of Green Health events looking at how our green spaces can help improve health and wellbeing and ways you can get involved.
