Winter has been an important season for creating more habitats for wildlife across the Astley Ainslie estate.

Now the shortest days are behind us, the Bioquarter is buzzing with early signs of spring, with hazel catkins appearing and bird activity picking up across the site.

The Western General has had a lively winter season, with staff, volunteers and partners helping to bring nature, connection and wellbeing to the site.

There’s been a wonderful mix of wellbeing, creativity and conservation activity across the Royal Edinburgh Hospital this winter, supported by staff, volunteers and partner organisations.

Autumn was busy at the Astley Ainslie with a scything festival to help restore balance in meadow plant communities.

Our RSPB Nature and Wellbeing Officer, Beth, has been working with NHS staff, patients, and volunteers to bring nature closer to everyday life at the Western General Hospital

The Royal Ed is the only hospital in Scotland to have a Green Flag award and the site is very proud of it.

Working with the NHS Lothian Estates team and a range of partners, Lou has been transforming spaces across the site so staff, patients, and visitors can enjoy greener, more welcoming areas.

Nature-based programmes, such as gardening, conservation work, forest bathing, hillwalking, and other ‘green’ activities, could and should be an option at all stages of a person’s recovery journey.

It’s been a busy couple of months here at the RIE.
