Project: Wellbeing walks at the Bioquarter

Step outside for a healthier, happier you.

As little as ten minutes outside can help lower stress levels, boost immunity and increase focus. Explore the BioQuarter greenspaces with our walking routes designed for everyone, – staff, patients and visitors.

A few steps can make a difference

Make the Wellbeing Walk part of your day, whether you have a few minutes or time for a longer route. Follow the waymarkers, move at your own pace, and walk on your own or with company.

Time outdoors and gentle movement can provide a useful pause in the day. The route is designed to help hospital users connect with nearby nature and make the most of the greenspaces on the BioQuarter’s doorstep.

Choose a walk that works for your day

The map highlights a choice of routes around the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh and the wider BioQuarter, with approximate 15-minute, 20-minute and 30-minute options. A longer route of around 2 km is also shown. Benches are marked on the map so you can plan places to pause along the way.

Burdiehouse Burn

Follow the burn as it travels from its source in the Pentland Hills towards the sea at Joppa. This route offers the chance to walk beside water and connect with the wider green network surrounding the BioQuarter.

Little France Park

Explore part of Little France Park, where species-rich grasses and scrub provide habitat for insect life and migratory birds.

A walk for staff, patients and visitors

The Wellbeing Walk is here for everyone using the BioQuarter:

  • Staff can step outside for a change of scene, enjoy some gentle movement during a break, or walk and talk with a colleague. Heading out during your shift? Follow the uniform guidance for your role and be prepared for the weather.
  • Patients can enjoy some fresh air and time outdoors when appropriate. Choose a route that suits your circumstances and follow any advice from your healthcare team.
  • Visitors can use the walk to take a break, explore the local greenspace, or spend some time outdoors with the person they are visiting.

Paths and outdoor conditions can change, so everyone should take care and choose an alternative route if needed.
